What is an Alaskan Native Corporation 8(a)?

The Alaskan Native Corporation (ANC) 8(a) story began in 1971, with passage of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. Within that act, on the premise that it is appropriate and necessary to use the Federal government's procurement activity to help jump-start reservation economies, the U.S. Congress gave tribes and ANCs unique rights in the Federal procurement process. Alongside those rights, the act provides incentives for Federal agencies and prime contractors to do business with tribal and ANC firms.

In order to participate in Federal procurement as an ANC 8(a), a business must be certified by the U.S. Small Business Administration. Then, to maintain access to the special provisions for ANC 8(a) corporations, the firm must meet all quality standards for services and goods supplied to Federal agencies. The firm is also required to perform no less than 51 percent of its contract labor hours with its own direct labor.
